Gandalf looked at him.”My dear Bilbo!” he said. “Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were.” (Tolkien, 300)
Change is a part of life no one can help. Whether good or bad, it will always come. Change, funnily enough, is a very constant part of life. Of course, it is helped along when you partake in the unexpected. Bilbo quite obviously changed on his journey with the dwarves. He realized just how much courage and devotion and wit is in his being, which is quite a marvelous thing. |
“Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!” So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”
(Tolkien, 69)
Getting in a tough situation can be tough to get out of, but the only thing you can do is to go forward. Bilbo shows us that even the smallest of creatures can be brave and use their wits in the face of danger. Never give up and move on.
(Tolkien, 69)

As they sang the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and jealous love, the desire of the heart of the dwarves. (Tolkien, 15)
The love of the dwarves had an unspeakable impact on Bilbo. He felt the power of their desire for what they once had move through him. It planted itself into Bilbo’s mind and his heart. The want that others have can influence us strongly. Whether that want is ours or not, it makes you do things you would never even fathom partaking in.

Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking stick. (Tolkien, 15)
In one seemingly simple song Bilbo is considering doing the things he thought he’d never do. It is so unlike his nature to go and seek adventure, but here we are. Change is not something that comes along to Bilbo very often, and when it is it is not welcomed. It goes to show that even the simplest act can make a huge impact. |
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. (Tolkien, 288)
This is one of my favorites. It is such a powerful quote. The idea that the pursuit of happiness is greater than treasure speaks to most people. Everyone is always looking for more money, more wealth, and eventually people forget how to live on the way. Do not forget who you are, even in the face of what you think you want.
